Definition:

Human parainfluenza viruses (HPIV) are single-stranded RNA viruses belonging to the paramyxovirus family. They are the second most common causes of pediatric lower respiratory tract disease leading to hospitalization after respiratory syncytial virus. It can cause repeated infections throughout life, causing flu-like illness.
