Definition:

β-Site APP-cleaving enzyme (BACE1) can cleave the amyloid precursor protein (APP) at the β-secretase site to initiate the production of Aβ peptides, which form toxic oligomers and the amyloid plaques associated with Alzheimer's disease (AD).
