GALNT2 protein serves as a key enzyme in O-linked oligosaccharide biosynthesis, initiating the process by transferring an N-acetyl-D-galactosamine residue to a serine or threonine residue on the protein receptor. This enzymatic activity exhibits a wide substrate spectrum, including peptides such as EA2, Muc5AC, Muc1a, and Muc1b. GALNT2 is implicated in the O-linked glycosylation of critical proteins, including the immunoglobulin A1 (IgA1) hinge region, APOC-III, ANGPTL3, and PLTP.
