Neuropoietic cytokines exhibit pleiotrophic effects on homeostasis of glia and neurons in central, peripheral, and autonomic nervous system, and are well known for their role in the control of neuronal, glial and immune responses to injury or disease. Neuropoietic cytokines include interleukin-1 (IL-1), interleukin-6 (IL-6), leukemia inhibitory factor (LIF), ciliary neurotrophic factor (CNTF), tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF-α), and transforming growth factor beta (TGF- β), cardiotrophin 1 (CT-1), neuropoietin, cardiotrophin-like cytokine (CLC), gp130 family, etc. Various combinations of receptor subunits and signalling pathways are used by different members of the neuropoietic cytokine family.
