Trench fever

Definition:

Trench fever is a disease caused by the facultative intracellular gram-negative bacterium Bartonella quintana. It affected several million people worldwide during the two world wars. The incidence of trench fever dramatically decreased after World War II, but recently it reemerged in urban homeless populations of developed countries. The most frequent presentation of trench fever includes repeated cycles of high fever, headache, and dizziness.
