Definition:

Free fatty acid receptor 2 (FFA2)/GPR43 is a 7-transmembrane receptor activated by short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs) produced endogenously during colonic fermentation of dietary fiber by the gut microbiota. FFA2/GPR43 is expressed in various cell types such as adipocytes, pancreatic β-cells and immune cells.
