HGF & Receptors

Hepatocyte growth factor (HGF, also known as Scatter Factor) is among a group of factors possessing angiogenic ability. It belongs to the soluble cytokine family and is also a member of the plasminogen-related growth factor family. HGF is secreted by mesenchymal stem cells, and regulates cell growth, cell motility and morphogenesis of epithelial cells, endothelial cells, and haematopoietic stem cells, through its receptor, c-Met. Under normal conditions, HGF/c-Met axis plays an important role in normal biological functions in organism. However, in cancer cells, abnormal activation of HGF/c-Met axis promotes tumor development and progression by stimulating the PI3K/AKT, Ras/MAPK, JAK/STAT, SRC, Wnt/β-catenin, and other signaling pathways.
