Gas gangrene

Definition:

Gas gangrene is a rare and devastating wound infection. The Clostridium perfringens, septicum, and histolyticum are the principal causes of trauma-associated gas gangrene. It is characterized by fever, pain, edema, myonecrosis and gas production. Recently, there has also been an increased incidence of spontaneous gas gangrene caused by Clostridium septicum.
