Homologous recombination (HR) is a type of genetic recombination where genetic information is exchanged between two similar or identical molecules of double-stranded or single-stranded nucleic acids. Homologous recombination is a DNA metabolic process found in all forms of life that provides repair or tolerance of complex DNA damages including DNA gaps, DNA double-stranded breaks (DSBs), and DNA interstrand crosslinks (ICLs).
