Definition:

Enterococci are gram-positive, facultative bacteria with low intrinsic virulence that constitute the normal colonizing flora of the human gastrointestinal tract. Vancomycin-resistant enterococci (VRE) are among the most common antimicrobial-resistant pathogens globally, causing bacteremia with or without endocarditis, and intra-abdominal, wound, and genitourinary infection in immunocompromised patients. The mortality rate is high.
