Arginine vasopressin (AVP)/Antidiuretic hormone (ADH)/Vasopressin

Definition

Arginine vasopressin (AVP), also known as Vasopressin or antidiuretic hormone (ADH), is a nonapeptide synthesized in the hypothalamus. AVP is the major physiological regulator of renal water excretion and blood volume. AVP is synthesized in the neurosecretory cells of the supraoptic and paraventricular nuclei of the hypothalamus and stored in neurosecretory granules in the posterior pituitary gland. AVP plays essential roles in the control of the body’s osmotic balance, blood pressure regulation, sodium homeostasis, and kidney functioning.
