Background

Beta Tubulin is the major constituent of microtubules, which are cylindrical structures formed by lateral association of linear protofilaments composed of alpha- and beta-tubulin heterodimers. Microtubules grow through the addition of GTP-tubulin dimers to their ends, forming a stabilizing cap. Below this cap, tubulin dimers exist in a GDP-bound state due to the GTPase activity of alpha-tubulin.
