Ascaris Infection

Ascariasis, caused by the parasitic roundworm Ascaris lumbricoides, is one of the most prevalent human infections globally, affecting approximately 1.2 billion people, particularly in tropical regions and among children aged 5–15 in low-resource settings. Transmitted via ingestion of soil contaminated with feces, the infection leads to malnutrition, impaired physical and cognitive development, and severe cases may result in death. The disease significantly impacts both human health and the productivity of pigs, a major food animal, causing reduced growth and mortality. Despite global efforts through initiatives like the Millennium Development Goals and the Neglected Tropical Diseases Initiative, treatment remains limited to a few drugs, and high prevalence persists in many endemic areas.
