Abstract

The subacute and chronic toxicity of 2,6-xylidide of 2-pyridone-3-carboxylic acid (isonixine), a non-steroidal analgesic-anti-inflammatory agent, was investigated in male rabbits and in rats of both sexes, respectively, after oral administration. Isonixine was very well tolerated by the two species studied and only at the dose of 2000 mg/kg presented some mild toxic effects after 6 months of daily treatment. It is worthwhile to note that isonixine did not induce any gastro-intestinal lesion even after repeated oral administration for periods up to 6 months at 2000 mg/kg.
