E/Envelope acts as a chaperone for the envelope protein E during intracellular virion assembly by masking and inactivating the fusion peptide of envelope protein E. prM is the only viral peptide matured by host furin in the trans-Golgi network, likely to prevent catastrophic activation of viral fusion activity in the acidic Golgi compartment prior to virion release. prM-E cleavage is inefficient, resulting in many virions being only partially matured.
