HIV-1 envelope spike trimer (gp160)3, cleaved to (gp120/gp41)3, is a type I membrane protein that fuses the virus and host cell membrane to initiate viral infection. gp140 is a non-cleaved exodomain of (gp160)3, with both its transmembrane segment (TM) and cytoplasmic tail (CT) truncated, and is often considered a possible replacement for natural Env spikes.
