Description

Benzalkonium chloride (solid) (Alkyldimethylbenzylammonium chloride (solid)) is a quaternary ammonium preservative, cationic surfactant, and antimicrobial (Antimicrobial) agent. Benzalkonium chloride (solid) is toxic[1].

In Vivo

Benzalkonium chloride (1.19-11.9 μg/cm2; intranasal administration; 8 times daily) exhibits dose-dependent nasal epithelial toxicity in Wistar rats: no effect is observed at the dose of 1.19 μg/cm2, mild to moderate damage occurs at 5.97 μg/cm2, and more severe damage is seen at 11.9 μg/cm2[1].
Benzalkonium chloride (0.001%; intranasal administration; twice daily; 14 to 28 days) induces nasal epithelial degeneration in rabbits[1].

MedChemExpress (MCE) has not independently confirmed the accuracy of these methods. They are for reference only.

Animal Model: Rabbits[1]
Dosage: 0.001%;
Administration: intranasal; twice daily; 14 or 28 days
Result: Induced degenerative changes, including squamous cell metaplasia, nuclei deformation, and increased heterochromatin, in the treated nasal epithelium.

Help & FAQs
  • Do most proteins show cross-species activity?

    Species cross-reactivity must be investigated individually for each product. Many human cytokines will produce a nice response in mouse cell lines, and many mouse proteins will show activity on human cells. Other proteins may have a lower specific activity when used in the opposite species.
