13-cis-β-Carotene ((7Z)-Provitamin A; (7Z)-beta-Carotene) is a provitamin A carotenoid isomer found in leaves, flowers, stems, and fruit of Momordica charantia. 13-cis-β-Carotene undergoes nonenzymatic isomerization to other β-carotene isomers during aerobic incubation, extraction, and analysis. 13-cis-β-Carotene can be used for the research of chronic diseases[1][2].

In Vitro

13-cis-β-Carotene (15 μM; 60 min) is oxidatively cleaved by rat liver cytosolic enzyme preparations to produce 18.5 pmol total retinal per mg protein, with all-trans retinal as the predominant isomer, and exhibits a cleavage rate 8.3% that of all-trans-β-carotene[2].
13-cis-β-Carotene (15 μM; 60 min) is oxidatively cleaved by rat intestinal mucosal enzyme preparations to produce 10 pmol all-trans retinal per mg protein, and exhibits a cleavage rate 1.8% that of all-trans-β-carotene[2].
13-cis-β-Carotene (75 μM; 60 min) undergoes nonenzymatic isomerization in incubation medium to form other β-carotene isomers, with 3.9% of the substrate converted, predominantly to all-trans-β-carotene[2].
13-cis-β-Carotene (75 μM; 60 min) has its nonenzymatic isomerization reduced by rat liver cytosolic enzyme preparations, resulting in 2.5% conversion to other β-carotene isomers, predominantly all-trans-β-carotene[2].
