Description

Aluminum potassium sulfate (Potassium alum) is an egg white adjuvant. Aluminum potassium sulfate acts as a mordant to help dyes bind to tissue components, enhancing the staining effect and stability during staining. Aluminum potassium sulfate can induce allergic reactions in mice. Aluminum potassium sulfate can be used in research for bacterial and tissue staining[1][2][3][4].

In Vitro

Aluminum potassium sulfate (4 h) irreversibly inhibits α-amylase (70% reduction), protease (51% reduction), and lipase (31% reduction) activities in midgut extracts of adult Periplaneta americana, with greater inhibitory effects observed in females than males[1].
Aluminum potassium sulfate can be used as an adjuvant of ovalbumin to induce anaphylaxis in mice.[3].

MedChemExpress (MCE) has not independently confirmed the accuracy of these methods. They are for reference only.

In Vivo

Formalized Vibrio anguillarum bacterin adjuvanted with 2.5% Aluminum potassium sulfate (50-100 μL; i.p.) causes a significant reduction in growth, severe chronic peritonitis and organ damage in rainbow trout[3].
Formalized Vibrio anguillarum bacterin adjuvanted with 2.5% Aluminum potassium sulfate (100-200 μL; i.p.) causes minimal mortality, a significant reduction in growth, mild to moderate organ damage in rainbow trout[3].

MedChemExpress (MCE) has not independently confirmed the accuracy of these methods. They are for reference only.

Animal Model: Salmo gairdneri Richardson (approximately 3 cm length, mean weight 1.5 g)[3]
Dosage: 50; 100 μl (adjuvanted with 2.5% Aluminum potassium sulfate)
Administration: i.p.
Result: Reached 67% cumulative mortality at 48 days post-vaccination for the 50 μl adjuvanted dose.
Reached 74% cumulative mortality at 48 days post-vaccination for the 100 μl adjuvanted dose.
Achieved 231% weight increase over six weeks for the 50 μl adjuvanted dose.
Caused severe reactive peritonitis, inflammatory oedema of visceral peritoneum, macrophage infiltration and adjuvant deposition in serosa of ovary, liver, and pancreas, progressive focal degeneration of pancreatic acini, granulomata formation, fibroblast proliferation with collagen deposition, splenic and renal haemopoietic tissue depletion, occasional subcapsular hepatic necrosis, and heavy sequestration of alum into hepatocytes.
Showed no significant additional protection against Vibrio anguillarum challenge compared to non-adjuvanted vaccine.
Animal Model: Salmo gairdneri Richardson (20 cm length, mean weight 100 g-156 g)[3]
Dosage: 100; 200 μl (adjuvanted with 2.5% Aluminum potassium sulfate)
Administration: i.p.
Result: Reached 5% cumulative mortality at 48 days post-vaccination for the 100 μl adjuvanted dose.
Reached 6% cumulative mortality at 48 days post-vaccination for the 200 μl adjuvanted dose.
Achieved 53% weight increase over six weeks for the 100 μl adjuvanted dose.
Achieved 26% weight increase over six weeks for the 200 μl adjuvanted dose.
Caused peritoneal oedema, macrophage infiltration, distortion of pancreatic acini, focal hepatic necrosis, severe focal necrosis of renal haemopoietic tissue, sequestration of alum into hepatocytes, pancreatic tissue fibrosis, organizing focal necrosis of liver and kidney, increased macrophage activity in peritoneal tissues, reduction in splenic white pulp, and gonad damage with fibrosed tissue contraction by one month post-injection.
Showed no significant additional protection against Vibrio anguillarum challenge compared to non-adjuvanted vaccine.

Help & FAQs
  • Do most proteins show cross-species activity?

Species cross-reactivity must be investigated individually for each product. Many human cytokines will produce a nice response in mouse cell lines, and many mouse proteins will show activity on human cells. Other proteins may have a lower specific activity when used in the opposite species.
