  3. α-Lactalbumin

α-Lactalbumin is a globular whey protein that exists in milk. α-Lactalbumin binds Ca2+, Mg2+, Mn2+, Na+, K+ and Zn2+ ions; among these, Ca2+ binding enhances protein stability, while Zn2+ binding reduces stability and induces aggregation. α-Lactalbumin forms amyloid fibrils, amorphous aggregates, nanoparticles and nanotubes depending on external conditions. α-Lactalbumin exhibits bactericidal and antiviral activities. α-Lactalbumin has anxiolytic and antidepressant activities, and its effects are enhanced under stress conditions.

Beschreibung

α-Lactalbumin is a globular whey protein that exists in milk. α-Lactalbumin binds Ca2+, Mg2+, Mn2+, Na+, K+ and Zn2+ ions; among these, Ca2+ binding enhances protein stability, while Zn2+ binding reduces stability and induces aggregation. α-Lactalbumin forms amyloid fibrils, amorphous aggregates, nanoparticles and nanotubes depending on external conditions. α-Lactalbumin exhibits bactericidal and antiviral activities. α-Lactalbumin has anxiolytic and antidepressant activities, and its effects are enhanced under stress conditions[1][2][3].

In Vitro

Acylated and esterified derivatives of bovine α-Lactalbumin possess broad-spectrum antiviral activity against HIV-1, HIV-2, HSV-1, cytomegalovirus, and avian influenza H5N1[1].
α-Lactalbumin is a component of lactose synthase, an enzyme system, which consists of galactosyltransferase (GT) and α-Lactalbumin[1].

In Vivo

α-Lactalbumin (18.8 g/100 g; dietary; ad libitum daily; 30 days) reduces weight gain, decreases aggressive behaviour relative to casein-fed mice (matching levels seen in whey-fed mice), and modulates anxiety- and depression-like behaviours in male C57BL/6J mice, with effects that persist and show context-dependent changes for 7 days after diet withdrawal[3].

Animal Model: C57BL/6J (male, 2.5 months old)[3]
Dosage: 18.8 g/100 g (diet content)
Administration: dietary; ad libitum daily; 30 days
Result: Reduced weight gain significantly compared to casein-fed mice.
Decreased aggressive behaviour to 29% in group social tests.
Spent less time (124 s) and had lower mobility (102 s) in the light compartment of the light-dark box test.
Travelled a longer distance (1235 mm) in protected zones of the elevated-plus maze.
Showed longer total duration (15.4) and higher total frequency (8.8) of freezing behaviour near a new object in the open-field test.

Die Formel zur Berechnung von Molaritäten

Mass (g) = Concentration (mol/L) × Volume (L) × Molecular Weight (g/mol)

The dilution calculator equation

Konzentration (Stammlösung) × Volumen (Stammlösung) = Konzentration (Ziellösung) × Volumen (Ziellösung)

Diese Gleichung wird häufig abgekürzt als: C1V1 = C2V2

Concentration (start) × Volume (start) = Concentration (final) × Volume (final)
× = ×

Help & FAQs
  • Do most proteins show cross-species activity?

Species cross-reactivity must be investigated individually for each product. Many human cytokines will produce a nice response in mouse cell lines, and many mouse proteins will show activity on human cells. Other proteins may have a lower specific activity when used in the opposite species.
