Galactosylhydroxylysine is a component of bone collagen produced by post-translational glycosylation of hydroxylysine. Galactosylhydroxylysine is released during bone resorption and has been shown to be elevated in metabolic bone loss.

At equivalent molar concentrations, both the salt and free forms of a compound exhibit comparable biological activity. Nevertheless, the salt form (Galactosylhydroxylysine hydrochloride) usually boasts enhanced water solubility and stability.
