Merbromin is a mixed inhibitor of the 3-chymotrypsin-like protease (3CLpro) of SARS-CoV-2, with an IC₅₀ of 2.7 μM. Merbromin effectively inhibits the replication of the Zika virus (ZIKV) and shows anti-ZIKV activity by inhibiting ZIKVpro. Merbromin can also be used as a topical disinfectant for cuts and scrapes, and it serves as a biological dye.

Merbromin (0-10 μM) affects both the K_M and K_cat of 3CLpro, where the K_M value increases from 9.02 μM to 14.28 μM, and the K_cat value decreases from 1.45 min to 0.63 min^[1].
Merbromin with the K_D for 3CLpro is 0.23 μM^[1].
