Azidocillin, a semi-synthetic Penicillin, is an orally active β-lactam antibiotic. Azidocillin bears an azide functionality and retains on-target activity within bacteria. Azidocillin can be used to research osteitis caused by dental surgery, otitis media, enterococcal septicemia and other bacterial infectious diseases. Azidocillin is a click chemistry reagent, it contains an Azide group and can undergo copper-catalyzed azide-alkyne cycloaddition reaction (CuAAc) with molecules containing Alkyne groups. It can also undergo strain-promoted alkyne-azide cycloaddition (SPAAC) reactions with molecules containing DBCO or BCN groups.

In Vitro

Azidocillin (0.004-16.0, >16.0 μg/mL; 24 h) inhibits the growth of most bacteria isolated from human mandibular osteitis, with mean MIC values ranging from 0.005 to 1.2 μg/mL across bacterial genera, and only a small subset of strains exhibiting MIC values above 2.0 μg/mL[1].

In Vivo

Azidocillin (15 mg/kg; i.v.; single dose) administered intravenously to rats with bile fistulas and ligated renal pedicles results in 12.9% of the dose being excreted as biologically active drug in bile over 1 hour, with extensive biotransformation leading to low levels of active drug relative to total radioactivity excreted[2].

Help & FAQs
  • Do most proteins show cross-species activity?

Species cross-reactivity must be investigated individually for each product. Many human cytokines will produce a nice response in mouse cell lines, and many mouse proteins will show activity on human cells. Other proteins may have a lower specific activity when used in the opposite species.
