About LOC108863622

Summary

This record encompasses the promoter of the steroidogenic acute regulatory protein (Star) gene. This promoter is induced by cyclic AMP and is regulated by signalling through various factors, in particular retinoic acid and Hormones. Nuclear receptor subfamily 5 group A member 1 (Nr5a1/Sf1) binds to multiple sites in this region and synergizes with CCAAT/enhancer binding proteins, nuclear hormone receptors, retinoid receptors, and GATA binding proteins to promote transcription. A composite binding element in the proximal promoter region associates with cAMP responsive element binding protein 1 and multiple members of the AP-1 family of transcription factors, resulting in synergism and competitive crosstalk that further modulate activity of this promoter in different cellular conditions. Binding by nuclear receptor subfamily 0 group B member 1 near the putative TATA box results in repression of transcription. Two E-box motifs located 2 kb distal to the transcription start site may mediate activation of this region by circadian regulators such as Clock. [provided by RefSeq, Oct 2016]
