An example of how to use the Density Calculator Equation

You purchased 100 mg of Valproic acid and found it was liquid upon receipt. You want to calculate the total liquid volume for subsequent aliquoting.

  1. Enter 100 in the mass field and select the unit (mg)
  2. Enter 0.92 in the density field (g/mL)
  3. Click "Calculate"
  4. The result is Volume = 0.1087 mL
How to weigh liquid-form products?
  1. Place an empty container on the analytical balance and tare (zero) the reading.
  2. Aspirate the product with a pipette, dispense it into the tared container, and record the mass.
  3. Add the appropriate solvent to dissolve the product and prepare a stock solution at the target concentration.
  4. Aliquot the stock solution for storage; dilute to the working concentration prior to use.
    Note: Liquid density varies with temperature; therefore, gravimetric measurement is more accurate than volumetric measurement. Weighing by mass is recommended for experimental procedures.
