MEM-α Medium (with Nucleosides)

Description & Advantages
MEM-α is a synthetic cell culture medium developed through modifications of Eagle's Basal Medium (BME), which Harry Eagle formulated in the 1950s. It is now among the most widely used media for mammalian cell culture. In 1971, Stanners and colleagues further modified MEM by increasing the range and concentrations of amino acids and adding vitamins, creating MEM-α (alpha modification). Compared with standard MEM, MEM-α contains additional components, including non-essential amino acids, sodium pyruvate, lipoic acid, vitamin B12, biotin, and ascorbic acid. Its broader nutrient profile supports a wider range of cells, including both suspension and adherent cells, making it a nutrient-enriched formulation in the MEM family.
MCE MEM-α Medium (with Nucleosides) is the standard formulation containing ribonucleosides and deoxyribonucleosides. Its nutrient profile provides cells with these components directly, reducing their reliance on de novo nucleotide synthesis. It is widely suitable for the routine culture of various mammalian cells.

Protocols
MCE MEM-α Medium (with Nucleosides) is a basal medium that does not contain proteins, lipids, or growth factors. Add appropriate supplements according to the cell type and experimental requirements. For routine culture, approximately 10% fetal bovine serum (Cat. No.: HY-T1000) may be added. For low-serum or serum-free culture, supplements such as insulin-transferrin-selenium (ITS, Cat. No.: HY-K3018) may be added as needed.
This product contains L-Glutamine, which gradually degrades during storage in liquid medium. If the medium has been stored at 2–8°C for an extended period, assess whether additional L-Glutamine is needed based on the cells’ requirements and culture performance.
Note: This product does not contain antibiotics. Penicillin-Streptomycin Solution (Cat. No.: HY-K1006) may be added if required by the experiment. After adding serum, ITS, antibiotics, or other supplements, store the prepared medium at 2–8°C and use it within one week.
Application
MCE MEM-α Medium (with Nucleosides) is suitable for culturing a wide range of suspension and adherent cells, including HeLa, BHK-21, HEK 293, HEP-2, HT-1080, MCF-7, fibroblasts, and primary rat astrocytes. This product contains ribonucleosides and deoxyribonucleosides, providing cells with readily available nucleoside precursors and reducing the need for de novo synthesis. Its nutrient-rich formulation is particularly suitable as a basal medium for routine culture during cell recovery and expansion.
