Immunoglobulin-like Cell Adhesion Molecules
Immunoglobulin-like cell adhesion molecules (IgSF CAMs) are cell adhesion molecules that belong to immunoglobulin superfamily. They are a collection of integral membrane glycoproteins that possess at least one Ig-like domain in their extracellular region, capable of heterophilic and/or homophilic binding to integrins and/or among themselves. Intercellular adhesion molecules (ICAMs), vascular cell adhesion molecules (VCAMs), MAdCAM-1 and activated leukocyte cell adhesion molecule (ALCAM), which are important in leukocyte trafficking events, also belong to IgSF CAMs. IgSF CAMs regulate important processes such as cell proliferation, differentiation and morphogenesis by initiating intracellular signaling cascades at cell-cell contact sites.
