CD324/E-Cadherin

CD324 corresponds to E-cadherin, the epithelial cadherin whose cytoplasmic tail is coupled to the actin cytoskeleton through beta-catenin, alpha-catenin and p120-catenin. Adhesive strands of the molecule zipper neighboring epithelial cells into coherent sheets, and phosphorylation or proteolytic cleavage of the ectodomain loosens these contacts. The gene CDH1 is a bona fide tumor suppressor: germline mutations predispose to hereditary diffuse gastric cancer and lobular breast carcinoma, while transcriptional repression by Snail, Twist and ZEB factors drives the epithelial-mesenchymal transition of invasive carcinomas. Soluble E-cadherin fragments circulate in cancer patients and are studied as biomarkers. Recombinant CD324 is a standard substrate for epithelial adhesion and EMT assays.
