Description & Advantages
Minimum Essential Medium (MEM), also known as Minimal Essential Medium, was developed by Harry Eagle based on Eagle’s Basal Medium (BME). It is a basic cell culture medium with a simple formulation and broad applicability, and is one of the most commonly used media in animal cell culture.
MCE MEM Reduced Serum Medium for Transfection (Phenol Red) is a chemically defined essential medium developed based on classical MEM formulation. Enables at least a 50% reduction in fetal bovine serum (FBS) usage while maintaining normal cell growth rates and cellular morphology, and is suitable for the culture of a wide variety of suspension and adherent mammalian cells.
This product can be used as a cell transfection medium and is also suitable for routine cell culture under reduced-serum conditions.
MCE offers various formulations of MEM medium to meet the diverse requirements of different cell culture applications.
Protocol
For Cell Transfection
Follow standard transfection procedures and supplement the medium with fetal bovine serum (FBS) at 50% of the conventional concentration. Replace the culture medium with this formulation prior to transfection, and perform a medium change again 6–12 h after transfection.
For Routine Cell Culture
Supplement the medium with 2–5% fetal bovine serum (FBS). The optimal FBS concentration may be adjusted for individual cell lines to minimize serum usage whenever possible.
Note: MEM employs a sodium bicarbonate buffering system, it requires a 5–10% CO2 atmosphere to maintain physiological pH stability.
