Western equine encephalitis is an infection of the central nervous system caused by Western equine encephalitis virus (WEEV), an alphavirus in the Togaviridae family of +ssRNA viruses, and transmitted by Culex mosquitoes. WEEV was first isolated in 1930 in California, USA.
