Background

Function
PSMC6 is a component of the 26S proteasome complex and participates in the degradation of ATP-dependent ubiquitinated proteins. This complex plays a crucial role in maintaining protein homeostasis by clearing misfolded or damaged proteins (which can impair cellular function) and removing unwanted proteins. Therefore, the proteasome is involved in various cellular processes, including cell cycle progression, apoptosis, and DNA damage repair. PSMC6 belongs to the heterohexameric ring of AAA (ATPases associated with various cellular activities) proteins, which can unwrap ubiquitinated target proteins and transport them to the proteolytic chamber for degradation into peptides.

Isoforms & Post-Translational Modification
PSMC6: 389 amino acids, molecular weight 44,173 Da.
-
Subunit
Component of the 19S proteasome regulatory particle complex. The 26S proteasome consists of a 20S core particle (CP) and two 19S regulatory subunits (RP). The regulatory particle is made of a lid composed of 9 subunits, a base containing 6 ATPases including PSMC6 and few additional components. Interacts with PAAF1.
