(Rac)-Ketoconazole interferes with ergosterol synthesis by inhibiting cytochrome P450-dependent 14α-sterol demethylase (CYP51), a key enzyme on the fungal cell membrane, leading to membrane dysfunction and ultimately inhibition of fungal growth and reproduction.
