Description

2-Phenylethanol (Phenethyl alcohol) is an aromatic alcohol with a rose-like odour. 2-Phenylethanol is a flavour and fragrance compound, and can be used as a preservative and anti-microbial agent. 2-Phenylethanol has antityrosinase and antimicrobial activities[1][2].

In Vitro

2-Phenylethanol is used as an additive in cigarettes and a preservative in soaps[1].
2-Phenylethanol exerts an inhibitory effect on the growth of Gram-negative microorganisms[1].

MedChemExpress (MCE) has not independently confirmed the accuracy of these methods. They are for reference only.

In Vivo

2-Phenylethanol (5%; inhalation) increases anxiety-like behavior and decreases depression-like behavior in mice[3].

MedChemExpress (MCE) has not independently confirmed the accuracy of these methods. They are for reference only.

Animal Model: 11-week-old male mice (C57BL/6)[3]
Dosage: 5% (v/v)
Administration: Inhalation; once
Result: Exerted anti-depressive-like effects, but may increase anxiety-like behavior.

In Vivo:

For the following dissolution methods, please prepare the working solution directly. It is recommended to prepare fresh solutions and use them promptly within a short period of time.
The percentages shown for the solvents indicate their volumetric ratio in the final prepared solution. If precipitation or phase separation occurs during preparation, heat and/or sonication can be used to aid dissolution.

Help & FAQs
  • Do most proteins show cross-species activity?

Species cross-reactivity must be investigated individually for each product. Many human cytokines will produce a nice response in mouse cell lines, and many mouse proteins will show activity on human cells. Other proteins may have a lower specific activity when used in the opposite species.
