Ferrochelatase

Ferrochelatase is a key enzyme involved in heme biosynthesis. Ferrochelatase can catalyze the binding of ferrous ions to protoporphyrin IX to form heme. In the heme synthesis pathway, Ferrochelatase is involved in the last crucial reaction, ensuring the normal synthesis of heme in organisms. This provides a material basis for the functions of heme-containing proteins such as hemoglobin and myoglobin, thus guaranteeing the smooth progress of important physiological processes such as oxygen transport and cellular respiration. Abnormalities in Ferrochelatase activity are closely related to diseases such as hereditary erythropoietic protoporphyria[1].
