HBB2 - hemoglobin, beta Gene

Also Known as HBB; HBB1

Species: Oryctolagus cuniculus

Gene Type: protein coding
Gene ID: 100009084

Summary

The adult Hemoglobin is a heterotetramer of two alpha chains and two beta chains, and functions in the transport of oxygen from the lungs to various peripheral tissues. This gene is expressed in red blood cells and encodes the beta polypeptide chain. Studies have shown that two isoforms are produced from the same mRNA by use of alternative in-frame translation termination codons via a stop codon readthrough mechanism, both in rabbit reticulocyte lysates and in intact reticulocytes.
