Orthologs of this gene express a preproprotein that is processed into a neuropeptide ligand for two G-protein coupled receptors in the central nervous system. The neuropeptide is thought to directly or indirectly regulate feeding, weight regulation, and pain response. The preproprotein is translated using a non-AUG initiation codon.
