Tonsillitis

Tonsillitis is inflammation of the tonsils in the upper throat, which can be acute or chronic, commonly caused by bacterial (e.g., Group A streptococcus) or viral (e.g., Epstein-Barr virus, adenovirus) infections. It presents with symptoms such as sore throat, fever, difficulty swallowing, and enlarged lymph nodes, and is more prevalent in children and teenagers. While acute tonsillitis usually resolves within one to two weeks, chronic tonsillitis may lead to recurrent infections and complications like peritonsillar abscess. The tonsils, part of the lymphatic system, help trap pathogens, but when overwhelmed, they become inflamed.
