Summary

This region represents a conserved enhancer element that drives expression of a reporter transgene in motor neurons. This sequence regulates expression of the Isl1 (ISL1 transcription factor, LIM/homeodomain) gene, located approximately 220 kb upstream. Activity of this enhancer in different parts of the brain is regulated by binding of paired-like homeobox 2 (Phox2) and LIM homeobox (Isl1-Lhx3 complex) proteins, and may be antagonized by the visual system homeobox 2 (Chx10) and SRY-box 1 (Sox1) repressors.
