Venezuelan equine encephalitis is an infection of the central nervous system caused by Venezuelan equine encephalitis virus (VEEV), an alphavirus in the Togaviridae family of +ssRNA viruses, and transmitted by Ochlerotatus mosquitoes. VEEV was first isolated in 1938 in Venezuela.
