Vaginitis

Vaginitis is a common gynecologic condition characterized by inflammation or infection of the vagina and vulva, leading to symptoms such as itching, burning, pain, abnormal discharge (which may be thick, thin, or frothy), and bad odor. It commonly affects women and girls of all ages and is often caused by an imbalance in the normal vaginal flora, including bacterial vaginosis, vulvovaginal candidiasis (yeast infection), and trichomoniasis. Other contributing factors include hormonal changes during menstruation, pregnancy, or menopause, use of antibiotics or hormonal contraceptives, poor hygiene, irritants like soaps or douches, and sexual activity. Diagnosis is based on clinical symptoms, physical examination, and laboratory testing to identify the underlying cause. Treatment varies depending on the etiology and typically includes antibiotics, antifungal agents, or topical therapies. Prevention involves maintaining good genital hygiene, avoiding harsh products, using protection during sex, and refraining from douching. Untreated vaginitis, especially during pregnancy, may lead to complications such as preterm labor or low birth weight.
