Protochelin is a tricatecholate siderophore that occurs in Azotobacter vinelandii under iron-limited conditions. Protochelin chelates iron to form an iron-protochelin complex, which is taken up by Azotobacter vinelandii cells under iron-limited conditions.

Protochelin (A310 = 10; 8-25 h) confirms it is a condensation product of Azotochelin (HY-118009) and aminochelin, as it breaks down into these constituent catecholates and their associated amino compounds[1].
Protochelin confirms the molecular weight of protochelin from A. vinelandii matches that of authentic protochelin, verifying its identity as a tricatecholate siderophore[1].
Protochelin (0.12 μmol catechol mL-1) exhibits rapid iron-binding activity in the CAS assay, with this activity completely inhibited by pre-incubation with 1 mM molybdate[1].
Protochelin (A310 = 0.40-0.500; 24 h-5 days) promotes growth of siderophore-deficient A. vinelandii strain P100 under iron-restricted conditions with 1 μM molybdate, but this growth-promoting activity is inhibited by 1 mM molybdate[1].
Protochelin (1-10 μM ferric citrate; 24 h) production by A. vinelandii strain UA1 grown in 1 mM molybdate medium is iron-repressible, with production strongly inhibited at Ferric citrate (HY-N1428C) concentrations of ≥ 9 μM[1].
Protochelin (15 min; pH 7.0-8.0) exhibits low solubility (~2.4 × 10-4 M) at pH 7.0 and significantly higher solubility (>1.0 mM) at pH 8.0 in buffered aqueous solutions[2].
