Background
-
Function
ABCB5 is an Energy-dependent efflux transporter responsible for decreased drug accumulation in multidrug-resistant cells. Specifically present in limbal stem cells, where it plays a key role in corneal development and repair[1][2][3][4].

Subcellular Localization
Cell membrane; Multi-pass membrane protein

Expression
Tissue_specificity:In epidermal melanocytes, CD133-expressing progenitor cells express this protein (protein level) . This protein is widely expressed and specifically expressed in pigment cells. It is highly expressed in various malignant tissues: highly expressed in clinical melanoma and lowly expressed in normal skin. In melanoma, this protein marks malignant melanoma initiating cells (MMICs) , which have unlimited self-renewal capacity, leading to irreversible tumor progression and metastasis, thus triggering clinical malignancy. This protein is also highly expressed in various leukemia cells. It is also expressed in the basal limbal epithelium. -
