Background

Function
CD14 is an important innate immune pattern recognition receptor, primarily serving as a component of the lipopolysaccharide (LPS) receptor complex. It plays a crucial role in recognizing Gram-negative bacteria and their products, and in activating inflammatory responses. CD14 itself lacks a transmembrane signal transduction structure; therefore, it typically functions as a co-receptor in synergy with TLR4 and MD-2.

Expression
Tissue_specificity:Protein levels were detected on macrophages (PubMed: 1698311) . It is strongly expressed on the surface of monocytes and weakly expressed on the surface of granulocytes; it is also expressed in macrophages of most tissues.
Induction:The expression in monocytes is highly induced by 27-hydroxycholesterol, priming monocytes/macrophages such that LPS-mediated inflammatory reaction is accelerated. Secretion of soluble CD14 is also enhanced -
Subunit
Interacts with LPS-bound LPB. Belongs to the lipopolysaccharide (LPS) receptor, a multi-protein complex containing at least CD14, LY96 and TLR4.
