Bromochloro-5,5-dimethylhydantoin is a bactericidal agent and membrane-disrupting agent. Bromochloro-5,5-dimethylhydantoin disrupts bacterial cell membranes, alters membrane structure and permeability, and induces leakage of soluble proteins and ions from bacterial cells. Bromochloro-5,5-dimethylhydoin exhibits bactericidal activity against bacteria[1].

In Vitro

Bromochloro-5,5-dimethylhydantoin (5-25 mg/L; 3 min) induces potent bactericidal activity against Escherichia coli 8099, resulting in 6.56 and 6.99 log10 reductions in viable counts after 3 min of exposure at 20 mg/L and 25 mg/L respectively, while lower concentrations induce less or no bactericidal effect[1].
Bromochloro-5,5-dimethylhydantoin (20 mg/L; 3 min) induces elongation of Escherichia coli 8099 cells, suggesting an SOS response, while causing less visible membrane surface damage compared to other treatments[1].
Bromochloro-5,5-dimethylhydantoin (20 mg/L; 1, 3, 5, 10, 20 min post-exposure) induces minimal leakage of potassium and magnesium ions from Escherichia coli 8099 cells, with ion leakage remaining near baseline levels over 20 min of exposure[1].
