Polycarbophil is an orally active hydrophilic polymer. Polycarbophil achieves bioadhesion through hydrogen bonding between carboxyl groups and mucosal surfaces, and prolongs compound retention time and regulates compound release through swelling properties. Polycarbophil relieves constipation and diarrhea.

Biological Activity
Polycarbophil (0.5%-1.0% w/v; 25-120 min) increases the apparent permeability of Pipemidic acid (HY-B1210) by 2.3-4.3 times in isolated porcine urinary bladder wall, primarily due to enhanced urothelium permeability[2].

Polycarbophil (500-1000 mg/kg; p.o.; before constipation inducer) restores fecal weight and relieves constipation in Loperamide (HY-156131)/Clonidine (HY-12721)-induced constipated rats[3].
Polycarbophil (500-1000 mg/kg; p.o.; before stress) reduces stress-induced fecal output in wrap restraint stress (WRS)-induced defecation rats[3].
Polycarbophil (500-1000 mg/kg; p.o.; before diarrhea inducer) suppresses Castor oil (HY-107799)-induced diarrhea in rats[3].
