Biological Activity

Description

CFTR Protein, Human (HEK293) is the recombinant human-derived CFTR, expressed by HEK293 , with tag Free labeled tag.

Background

CFTR is an epithelial ion channel that plays a crucial role in regulating epithelial ion and water transport and fluid homeostasis. It mediates chloride ion transport across the cell membrane and possesses intrinsic ATPase activity, utilizing ATP to gate its channel function; anion flow is gated by cycles of ATP binding and hydrolysis. The channel is also permeable to HCO3-, with selectivity dependent on extracellular chloride concentration. In vitro, CFTR facilitates ATP-dependent glutathione flux and modulates the activity of other ion channels and transporters. It is essential for airway fluid homeostasis, regulating the pH and ion content of the airway surface fluid layer, thereby contributing to pathogen defense. CFTR influences the epithelial sodium channel (ENaC) complex by regulating its cell surface expression and may control bicarbonate secretion and salvage via SLC4A7. Additionally, CFTR inhibits ANO1 chloride channel activity and plays a role in chloride and bicarbonate homeostasis during sperm epididymal maturation and capacitation.
