KDM4C is a histone demethylase that specifically targets 'Lys-9' and 'Lys-36' residues of histone H3, playing a central role in histone code regulation. It does not act on H3 'Lys-4', 'Lys-27', or H4 'Lys-20' residues. The enzyme demethylates trimethylated H3 'Lys-9' and H3 'Lys-36' residues but shows no activity toward mono- or dimethylated residues. The demethylation reaction produces formaldehyde and succinate. by similar functions also include involvement in chromatin remodeling and gene expression regulation.
