Background

MEF2A is a transcriptional activator that specifically binds to the MEF2 element, 5'-YTA[AT](4)TAR-3', found in numerous muscle-specific genes. It is involved in activating various growth factor- and stress-induced genes and plays critical roles in skeletal and cardiac muscle development, neuronal differentiation, and survival. Through the p38 MAPK signaling pathway, MEF2A regulates cell growth, survival, and apoptosis in muscle-specific or growth factor-related transcription. In cerebellar granule neurons, phosphorylated and sumoylated MEF2A represses NUR77 transcription to promote synaptic differentiation. Additionally, MEF2A associates with chromatin at the ZNF16 promoter.
