Background

PYCR1 is an oxidoreductase that catalyzes the final step in proline biosynthesis, reducing pyrroline-5-carboxylate to L-proline using NAD(P)H. At physiologic concentrations, it exhibits higher specific activity in the presence of NADH. PYCR1 is also involved in the cellular response to oxidative stress.
