Streptokinase is an extracellular metalloenzyme produced by beta-hemolytic streptococci and is used as an effective and inexpensive thrombolytic drug in certain cases of myocardial infarction (heart attack) and pulmonary embolism. It belongs to a group of drugs called fibrinolytics, which activate plasminogen by cleavage to produce plasmin.
